Village Harmony Summer Camp

2007

Oregon Adult Camp

August 31-September 9

Led by Larry Gordon and Patty Cuyler.

The locus of this camp will be at St. Benedict’s Lodge in McKenzie Bridge, Oregon (about an hour east of Eugene, and three hours from Portland) on the McKenzie River at the edge of the Willamette National Forest. Set in the heart of the Cathedral Forest, St. Benedict’s is an inspiring setting for singing.

Larry will bring an eclectic mix of shape-note, east European, South African and medieval songs to this camp session. Patty will teach a scintillating and eclectic mix that gives a broad introduction to the singing styles that Village Harmony is particularly known for: traditional shape-note and Appalachian music, Balkan village songs, Corsican and Georgian traditional polyphony. Larry and Patty will have just arrived from South Africa, so they will have some exciting new South African folk and freedom songs to teach.

Camp participants can also look forward to close encounters with Oregon’s famous old-growth fir trees, off-hours hikes to waterfalls, lava flows, wildflower meadows, and forever-view peaks within close range of the retreat center. The McKenzie river is swift, clear, and cold but there’s fine swimming to be found in nearby lakes and creeks, and relaxing soaks to be savored in natural hot springs. (If the timing’s right for ripening, we might even pick enough wild huckleberries for a pie!)
