New England Teen Session 1, 2007
Led by Patty Cuyler, Evegny Efremov, Luke Hoffman
The stunning and often unexpected harmonies of Ukrainian, Caucasus Georgian and Corsican polyphonic singing are featured in this album. New-comer Evgeny Efremov of Kiev led the session in a set of haunting and evocative folk music of Ukraine. Luke Hoffman, Village Harmony's newest faculty member taught American Gospel and precussion sessions. Village Harmony codirector Patty Cuyler taught an eclectic set of songs from Corsica and South Africa and the American shape-note and gospel traditions. This session toured through Massachusetts, New York State, Rhode Island and Vermont.
New England Teen Session 2, 2007
Led by Larry Gordon, Val Mindel, Tijana Vignevic
Tijana taught a selection of traditional village songs and contemporary composed pieces. Val Mindel brought a selection of Appalachian and other traditional harmony numbers, and also led some band numbers drawing on her extensive string band experience. Larry brought his typically eclectic mix of shape-note, renaissance and contemporary works.
July Adult Camp, 2007
Led by Peter & Mary Alice Amidon, Pete Sutherland
The Amidons taught a variety of folk genres from America, including shape-note, gospel, Appalachian, and some of their own great new arrangements of old songs. Pete, an accomplished and fiery fiddle-player, led the session’s band and taught both his own vocal compositions and arrangements of traditional folk songs.
August Adult Camp, 2007
Led by Mary Cay Brass, Kathy Bullock, Linda Hirschhorn
Mary Cay concentrated on music from the countries of former Yugoslavia and led instrumentalists in a Balkan band, accompanying some of the concert pieces. Linda Hirschhorn taught folk song arrangements in Hebrew and Ladino (a combination of Hebrew and Spanish) and some of her own songs. Kathy Bullock taught an engaging set of traditional and contemporary gospel music.
Oregon Camp, 2007
Led by Patty Cuyler & Larry Gordon
Larry taught an eclectic mix of shape-note, east European, South African and medieval songs. Patty taught the scintillating and eclectic mix that Village Harmony is particularly known for: traditional shape-note and Appalachian music, Balkan village songs, Corsican and Georgian traditional polyphony. Together, Larry and Patty led the group in some exciting new South African folk and freedom.
